A Riddle of Dreams

The night brings with it concealment, secrets, and mysteries. It also brings with it dreams. Aside from death, dream is the ultimate equalizer, for both the poor man and the rich man succumb to dreams.

We all dream different things. Some dreams are happy, others are not. Some dreams are memories, others arise out of fancy. So mysterious are dreams that ancient people associated them with the supernatural and even assigned gods to them.

One question arose as I pondered on dreams - are dreams representations of the man, or is the man a representation of his dreams?

The question can be answered both ways. If we consider that dreams are the representations of man, it makes sense since a lot of dreams arise out of our personal experiences in life. We dream of what we wish to accomplish and what we fear. We dream of love and of heartbreak. Surely a dream is a reflection of what we are.

But the inverse is also true. Man is ultimately a representation of his dreams. It is through dreams that we realize our goals in life. Our dreams push and shape us. They empower us to face challenges. Dreams are what give our lives meaning for without dreams, there is no hope, and a man without hope is as good as dead.

Maybe this is one of those riddles where the answer is another question.
