No Phones in College, Not Just Yet

The Principal and staff at my college are always saying things like "So you cannot live without your phone?" to which my response would be, "No, as a matter of fact, I cannot." Phones are the result of technological advancement, and as such, serve as a testament to the growth of our species. To hold back the use of technology is to regress society.

People in Shillong like to say they are developing, but preventing students from combining education with technology while in the vicinity of the campus proves this to be a hollow claim. I get that the Principal practically came from the Dark Ages where archaic practices were the norm, but what our college governing authority doesn't realize is that times have changed since their day. Here is a half-assed approach to managing an educational facility. If the man hated technology so much, why does he even allow lights in our class? Why does he wear glasses? These, Mr. Principal, are also the result of technology, considered at one point, by people like you, to be too progressive and destructive. And yet you fail to see the pattern. Please take a look at history - there have always been people who pushed for progress and those who have held it back. Your stance on mobile phones right now puts you on the wrong side of history.

Regardless of what this idiot wants however, I can rest easy knowing that eventually, he will find himself agreeing that mobile phones can be more useful than they can be distracting. The pattern of technology has always stayed the same, and though it may take the man decades to realize it, people eventually succumb to its mainstream usage. The Principal is no exception to this. That is what happens when you look at the world through the lens of conservatism. It blinds you to the limitless possibilities that can come out of something so "pointless."

What the faculty assumes, and assumes wrongly, is that college students only use phones for chatting with their friends and as such, is not productive. Yes, most of us do use phones to chat with friends, because we are young adults, and it is common behavior to do so. Most of us also have internet on our phones, that surprise surprise, we use for productive reasons. We look up words, we get the news, we stay ahead on the latest information, because in this fast-paced world, failure to do so will result in your getting left behind and feeling very lonely as a result (perhaps even taking out your frustration on those that are rushing past you < Hint).
