Origins and Evolution – A Reflection on 'Prometheus'

I've been meaning to watch Prometheus for a while now, but have never gotten around to actually doing it until today. Unlike so many people out there, I found the movie quite unique and philosophical. Though it didn't feature many Xenomorphs, it did focus on answering, at least in partiality, some questions that have been plaguing the Aliens saga for decades.

The beginning of the movie I thought was quite interesting. Yes, an alien giving his own life for the birth of the human race is filled with multiple contradictions, but I gather it was supposed to connect more on a symbolic level (perhaps even a religious one if you're into that type of stuff).

It got me reflecting, as I often do, on the paradoxical nature of life - so abundant yet so rare. The Earth itself is only partially habitable but life has blossomed to such a degree that it comes as no surprise that its origin has come to be associated with divine events. I believe, and it's a reasonable belief, that the Universe is teeming with life. There are probably thousands if not millions of planets out there that are capable of supporting life, and intelligent life at that.

I'm not usually one to get sentimental, but when I meditate on this idea, it sparks an almost innate humility. It leaves me wondering when we will finally be able to see life on other planets and interact with it (if we hadn't already). I do not subscribe to the theory of ancient astronauts as it is a baseless claim, but perhaps extraterrestrial intelligent beings are closer than we realize. Perhaps when we do encounter them in the future, it will be more of a reunion. If we are lucky enough to know of their origins, it may help shed some light on our own.

The duration of our existence on Earth alone has been very short, can you imagine what we compare to on a cosmological level? Simply astounding. We are mere infants still struggling to make sense of our purpose, but even so, we have come thus far because we have constantly persevered against all odds and will continue to do so. This is the Universal story of evolution, and it is the most beautiful Gospel you will ever hear.
